For its third year in a row, Samuel Merritt University’s Motion Analysis Research Center (MARC) hosted its annual symposium known as the MARC Symposium. The event consisted of demonstrative motion analysis sessions, collaborative clinical workshops, and keynote presentations covering clinical biomechanics, rehabilitation, and sports medicine.
Researchers, doctors, therapists, and students came from all parts of the US to advance their studies by sharing their experiences, which is what the Director, Andrew (Drew) Smith, aimed to do with the creation of the MARC Symposium while also serving as an interdisciplinary event.
“The MARC covers more than just podiatry, it covers orthopedic therapy and physical therapy, as well, and I wanted to have this kind of interdisciplinary approach,” Drew revealed, “You see these researchers and therapists talking about the same issues, but not necessarily realizing they have different approaches, so the collaborative value is there as well.”
Another core value of the symposium is to stimulate student research initiatives. By hosting keynote speakers Dr. Richard Bouché DPM, Dr. Irene Davis, and Dr. Russell Volpe, students gained intel from highly respected biomechanical researchers.
“The idea it to get a lot of student involvement,” Smith continued, “we want to make sure that there’s the educational component as well to incentivize these sorts of practices at a younger level.”
Sponsors Qualisys, C-Motion, and Tekscan supported the symposium to aid in the continued success of the MARC, which houses a Qualisys 9-Camera Oqus System along with other technology such as pressure mapping systems, force plates, EMG, and an instrumented treadmill.
“The Qualisys system is a crucial factor to the student interest and growing education,” stated the Director, “we really do appreciate the support that Qualisys and the other sponsors give each year.”
Qualisys will continue to support the MARC as it holds its 4th Annual symposium on November 2-3, 2018.
